In this guide, we'll show you exactly how to grow crisp, healthy lettuce indoors using the Kratky Method. No soil. No pumps. No fuss. Many hydroponic guides overcomplicate things, but we’ve made this one beginner-friendly, low-maintenance, and surprisingly fun. Let’s get growing.

First, what exactly is the Kratky Method, and why does it work so well indoors?

What is the Kratky Method?

The Kratky Method is a type of passive hydroponics, which means plants grow in water without using electric pumps or complex circulation systems. Instead of constantly circulating water and nutrients, this method relies on a simple, non-moving setup that lets gravity and plant biology do the work.

In simple terms, passive means fewer parts to manage, no buzzing equipment, and almost no maintenance

Developed by Dr. Bernard Kratky at the University of Hawaii, this method has become a favorite among home gardeners, educators, and anyone looking for a low-tech way to grow fresh greens indoors.

How it works:

  • Lettuce seeds are planted in a net pot with a growing medium like clay pellets
  • The pot rests above a container filled with nutrient-rich water
  • As the plant absorbs the water, the level drops and creates an air gap
  • That air gap naturally provides oxygen to the roots, eliminating the need for pumps or aerators.

Why Choose the Kratky Method?

Imagine walking to your countertop, snipping a handful of fresh, crisp lettuce, and making a salad in minutes. No soil, no mess, no buzzing equipment.

Often called the “set it and forget it” method, Kratky makes indoor gardening easy and rewarding. It’s perfect for beginners who want a low-stress way to start growing, and scalable enough for anyone ready to expand.

With Kratky, you can grow year-round, even in the dead of winter. No greenhouse needed, since most homes already stay within the ideal temperature range for leafy greens. And in summer, you skip the pests, deer, and unpredictable weather that can ruin outdoor crops.

You also avoid grocery store guesswork. No more flipping through plastic clamshells hoping to find a decent batch. Instead, you grow what you want, when you want, and pick it fresh.

Paired with our USA-made Happy Leaf Procyon 2.0 full-spectrum grow lights, Kratky-grown lettuce thrives indoors. It grows faster, tastes better, and stays more vibrant, no matter the season.

What You'll Need to Get Started

You don’t need a complicated system or a greenhouse. With just the right setup and a few reliable tools, you can grow crisp, countertop lettuce using the Kratky Method all year long.

Important: You will only fill it this high during the initial setup. See the watering section for more details.

Tip: Use a non-transparent container to keep your nutrient water mix in, or avoid putting it in direct light if using a clear container.

Step 3: Add Net Pot and Pellets

  • Fill the net pot with clay pellets.
  • Place the net pot into the jar so that the pellets are almost completely submerged, and screw on the metal lid ring.
  • Set aside the top layer of wet pellets before seeding.

Tip: This step can be done earlier in the setup process to avoid spills.

Step 6: Place Under Grow Light

  • Use the included hardware to hang your Procyon 2.0 grow light 8–10 inches above the jar.
  • Use a programmable timer and schedule your grow light to be on for 16 hours a day. Example: On at 6 am, off at 10 pm.

We’ve tested this setup using our 33-inch Procyon 2.0 LED grow light, the same one we use in our classroom and event demos, and it consistently delivers strong, healthy growth.

Watering Your Kratky Lettuce Jar

In this passive system, watering is minimal, but knowing when and how to refill is essential.

The first 3–4 weeks: After your initial setup, you typically won’t need to add any water at all. The plant’s roots will drink down the nutrient solution, and as the water level drops, an air gap forms. This air gap is essential; it gives the roots access to air and is the reason you don’t need to use pumps or motors for aeration!

After 3–4 weeks: When it’s time to refill, resist the urge to fill the jar all the way back up. Instead, always leave at least 2 inches of the net pot above the water line. This ensures your roots maintain that all-important air gap. If the jar is filled too high, the roots can suffocate, and your plant will struggle.

Reminder:  Always refill with nutrient solution, not plain water. This ensures your lettuce continues getting the balanced minerals it needs to stay crisp, green, and full of flavor.

Harvesting Your Indoor Lettuce

Most loose-leaf lettuce varieties are ready to harvest in about 4 to 6 weeks when grown with the Kratky Method.

Illustration of a hand reaching for lettuce, with scissors about to cut it from a pot.

These are often called “cut and come again” lettuces because you can harvest multiple times before replanting. To do this, simply pinch off or snip off the outer leaves with clean scissors or you can cut the entire head at once. Either way, your jar will provide several rounds of crisp, flavorful greens that you can grow any time of year, no matter the season.

How to Keep the Harvest Going with Succession Planting

One of the easiest ways to enjoy a continuous supply of lettuce is by using succession planting. This simply means starting new jars on a regular schedule so you always have plants at different stages.

For example, start a few seeds in week 1, another jar in week 3, and another in week 5. By the time your first batch is slowing down, your second will be ready, and your third will already be growing strong. With this simple rotation, you’ll never run out of fresh, homegrown lettuce.

Each jar will provide two or three harvests (cuttings). After several cuttings, you may notice changes such as slower growth, a shift in flavor, or a hint of bitterness. That’s a natural sign your plants are nearing the end of their cycle.

Restarting Your Kratky Jar

Cleaning and sanitizing your Kratky setup between plantings is quick and easy, and sets the stage for your next round of growth. A fresh start helps prevent algae or bacteria from taking hold and gives your new seedlings the best environment to thrive. Follow the steps below to refresh your supplies and get ready to grow again.

Here’s how to restart your jar:

  • Remove the old plant debris and roots from the jar, net pot, and pellets.
  • Wash the jar and net pot with dish soap and hot water, then let them dry completely.
  • Clean the pellets using one of these methods:
    • Soak in boiling water for 10 minutes
    • Place in a mesh laundry bag and run through the dishwasher on sanitize cycle
    • Soak in a 50/50 white vinegar-water solution for 20 minutes, then rinse and dry

Best Lettuce Varieties to Grow Indoors with the Kratky Method

One of the best parts of growing lettuce indoors is trying different flavors, colors, and textures. We recommend starting with loose-leaf varieties as they grow quickly, are easy to harvest, and work especially well with the Kratky Method. But don’t be afraid to experiment. If you find a favorite, we’d love to hear about it and share it with the Happy Leaf community!

Here are a few of our favorites to get you started:

  • Red Sails - Johnny’s Seeds
A beautiful, ruffled loose-leaf lettuce with bronze-red tips and tender green centers. Red Sails is known for its buttery texture and mild, slightly sweet flavor — perfect for fresh salads. Quick to harvest, it’s one of the easiest lettuces for beginners and my oh my, it just keeps growing!
  • Butterhead - Buttercrunch- True Leaf Market
An All-America Selections winner introduced by Cornell University, Buttercrunch has earned its place as the most popular butterhead variety. With tender, sweet, and buttery leaves, this lettuce is prized for its flavor and resilience.
  • Yugoslavian Red Leaf - Seed Savers Exchange
This heirloom variety forms loose, leafy heads with red-speckled, crinkled leaves. It has a delicate, buttery texture and a mild flavor that adds both beauty and taste to your indoor harvests.
  • Crisp Mint - Seed Savers Exchange
Despite the name, it’s lettuce, not mint! Crisp Mint produces upright, romaine-style heads with bright green leaves edged in red. Its flavor is crisp and refreshing with a hint of sweetness — perfect for sandwiches or crunchy salads.
  • Mascara - Uprising Seeds
A striking variety with deeply cut, burgundy-red leaves that hold their color well. Mascara is tender yet holds up nicely in a salad mix, with a mild flavor and a slight nuttiness that makes it stand out.

Troubleshooting Common Problems and Fixes

While lettuce is relatively easy, you might encounter a few common issues. Here’s a list of potential problems and their causes/fixes:

Algae growth (green water or slime): This happens if light gets into the reservoir. Cause: Container not opaque, or leaks of light around net pots. Solution: Cover the tank to block light (use opaque materials)

“Leggy” seedlings (tall, thin, pale): Cause: Not enough light, or light too far away, especially in the first week. Solution: Lower your grow light or place something underneath your jar to get it closer to the light.

Wilted or limp leaves: often means the roots aren’t getting water, or water was refilled too high, and roots are getting “choked out”. Solution: Check your water levels; if out, add more nutrient water. If too high, empty out some water so that there is an air gap. If the plant does not recover, restart your jar. In Kratky, you must check that the water hasn’t been completely used up before harvest time.

Grow Lights for the Kratky Method: Why Happy Leaf Stands Out

When you grow indoors with the Kratky method, the quality of your light makes all the difference. Lettuce and leafy greens need consistent, full-spectrum lighting to grow fast, develop good texture, and taste their best. Many generic grow lights either don’t provide the right spectrum or cast a harsh purple glow that isn’t pleasant in your home.

FAQs About the Kratky Method

What is the Kratky Method? The Kratky Method is a simple, passive form of hydroponics that lets plants grow in water without the need for pumps or electricity. As plants absorb water, the level drops and creates an air gap, giving roots the oxygen they need naturally.

Do I need a pump or aeration system? No. The Kratky Method’s design provides natural oxygenation through that air gap, so there’s no need for pumps, electricity, or moving parts.

Can I grow herbs with the Kratky Method? Yes! We grow almost all of our herbs and leafy greens with this method, spinach can be finicky, so for that we use the 70/30 coco coir method.

What temperature is best for growing indoors? Most lettuce and leafy greens grow best between 55–75°F (18–24°C). This makes the Kratky Method perfect for homes, classrooms, or offices. No greenhouse required.

How much light do my plants need? Your Kratky lettuce needs 16–18 hours of light each day. Using a timer helps automate the process. For best results, use a full-spectrum grow light like the Happy Leaf Procyon 2.0, designed specifically for leafy greens and indoor gardens.

How high should I hang my grow light? Keep your grow light about 8–10 inches above the tops of your plants, raising it as they grow taller. This prevents plants from becoming leggy and ensures strong, even growth.

What lettuce varieties grow best indoors? Loose-leaf types such as Red Sails, Crisp Mint, and Yugoslavian Red Leaf perform beautifully indoors. They grow quickly, taste great, and can be harvested multiple times.

Should I thin my lettuce seedlings? No. Multiple seedlings can grow together comfortably in a Kratky setup, and they’ll naturally adjust as they mature. But we also encourage experimentation!

How can I grow lettuce continuously? Start a new jar every one to two weeks. This process, known as succession planting, ensures you always have jars at different stages so you can enjoy a continuous harvest.

What nutrients should I use for Kratky hydroponics? Choose a nutrient mix designed for hydroponics, such as MaxiGro 10-5-14. It’s a simple, one-part formula that provides everything your plants need. Use one teaspoon per gallon of water and mix fresh each time you refill your jar.

When do I add nutrients? Always refill your jar with nutrient solution rather than plain water. This ensures your plants receive consistent nutrition throughout their growth.

How many jars fit under a Happy Leaf LED light? A 33-inch Procyon 2.0 can illuminate up to 24 Kratky jars, while the 17-inch version comfortably covers about 12.

How do I prevent bugs or pests? Because there’s no soil, pests are uncommon. If any appear, use yellow sticky traps near your jars.

How do I prevent algae or root rot? Block light from reaching the nutrient water by covering your jar with a dark sock or opaque wrap. Always maintain an air gap between the water and the net pot when refilling to prevent over-saturation.

My clay pellets have white residue, should I worry? Usually not. The white residue is often calcium or other natural minerals from your water. If it appears fuzzy or mold-like, reduce moisture levels and let the pellets dry slightly before reuse.

How many times can I harvest Kratky lettuce? Most lettuce varieties can be harvested three to five times before growth slows or leaves become bitter. When that happens, clean your jar and start fresh for the best results.

Why does my lettuce taste bitter? This usually means the plant is aging or has grown in higher temperatures. Restart your jar for fresh, tender leaves.

Can I reuse my nutrient water? Avoid using the leftover nutrient water that is left in your jar when you are restarting your jar. It’s best to mix a new batch each time. Nutrient levels change as plants grow, and fresh solutions ensure consistent results.

Can I grow multiple plants in one jar? It’s best to grow one plant per jar so each has enough space to thrive.

Conclusion & Next Steps

Start simple: Begin with easy varieties (like looseleaf lettuce or basil) and a modest setup. Success will build your confidence to expand.

Have fun! Watching a seed grow into food on your kitchen counter is rewarding and even a bit magical. Enjoy the process! And of course, enjoy those fresh and well-earned harvests, and pretty soon you’ll be on to spinach or even tomatoes!
